Understanding Pay as You Go Mode Pulse Modes: Count-Up vs. Count-In
Learn the differences between time-based and pulse-based billing. Both Count Up and Count In modes offer Pay as You Go pricing, but they work differently. Use this comparison to determine which configuration best suits your business needs.
General
Pulse offers a flexible "pay-as-you-go" experience is essential for automated services like car washes, laundromats, and campsite facilities.
Nayax offers two primary modes to handle these transactions: Count-Up and Count-In.
Use this guide to determine which mode fits your machine and how to configure them for maximum reliability.
1. Count-Up Mode: Time-Based Billing
Best for: Car wash bays, pet washes, and showers.
Count-Up mode allows customers to start a machine and pay only for the time they use. The device authorizes a maximum amount, and the session continues until the user stops it or the limit is reached.
- Pulse Connectivity: Uses a parallel connection between the VPOS/ONYX and the coin mechanism.
- Continuous Operation: The device sends a "pulse burst" at a constant rate to keep the machine running.
- Manual Stop: Users can end sessions via the device "X" button or an external button (configured via the "Door Open" attribute set to "Cancel").
- Power Recovery: If power fails, the device saves the Total Charge to memory and bills the customer once power is restored.
2. Count-In Mode: Pulse-Based Billing
Best for: Machines that calculate their own value (e.g., charging per gallon of water or per vacuum cycle).
In Count-In mode, the machine tells the Nayax device how much to charge by sending pulses back to it.
- 3-Wire Handshake:
- Yellow (Pulse 1): Device sends start/stop signals to the machine.
- Blue (Pulse 2): Machine sends pulses to the device to increment the charge.
- Red (Inhibit): Machine signals its status (Down = Working, Up = Idle).
- Precision Charging: Each pulse received on the Blue wire increases the transaction total in real-time based on your configured pulse value.
- Sync: Both Pulse 1 and Pulse 2 must share the same "Pulse Active Time" (set in 10ms increments).
