Understand the three ways a consumer can pay by card at a Nayax-enabled machine: Swipe, Contact (chip), and Contactless (tap), including how each reads card data and what security standard it uses.

Overview

Card Present transaction occurs when the consumer's physical card (or mobile payment device) is present at the point of sale, as opposed to a Card Not Present transaction, where the card details are entered remotely. Nayax devices support three Card Present transaction types, each defined by how the card data is read and authenticated.

Swipe Transaction

The consumer swipes the card through the card reader on the Nayax unit. Data is read from the card's magnetic stripe.

The magnetic stripe stores data on three tracks. Nayax reads from Track 2, which contains:

  • ✅PAN (Personal Account Number)
  • ✅Expiry date
  • ✅4–19 additional characters
  • ✅Service Code - may affect how the card is processed

Unlike chip-based transactions, the magnetic stripe is static - the data never changes. This makes swipe transactions more vulnerable to card skimming and data interception.

Security note: Swipe transactions offer lower security than Contact or Contactless transactions. Where possible, Nayax recommends enabling chip and contactless payment options on your devices.

Contact Transaction

The consumer inserts the card into the card reader. The Nayax unit reads data from the card's embedded EMV chip.

Unlike a swipe, the EMV chip is an active participant in the transaction it communicates with the issuer and can approve or decline the transaction based on the transaction data and issuer responses. Data is exchanged between the card and the unit throughout the entire transaction, not just at the point of reading.

As an additional security measure, the consumer may be prompted to enter a 4-digit PIN code to verify their identity.

EMV liability shift: When a chip card is used at an EMV-enabled terminal, liability for counterfeit card fraud shifts away from the merchant. Enabling Contact transactions on your Nayax devices provides this fraud protection.

Contactless Transaction

No physical contact is required between the consumer's payment method and the unit. The consumer taps their card or mobile payment app near the unit's reader. Designed for speed - the fastest of the three transaction types.

The unit communicates with the payment device using NFC (Near Field Communication) / Radio Frequency Induction (RFID) for proximity reading.

Contactless also supports mobile payment methods, including:

CVM Limit: The Cardholder Verification Method (CVM) Limit is a region-specific threshold. Transactions at or below this amount are processed without PIN entry. Transactions above the limit either require a PIN or are declined, depending on the card and issuer rules. The CVM Limit varies by country. Contact your Nayax account manager for the limit applicable to your region.
